I hear from people every week who think their tax problem is the end of the world. It usually isn't. I'm Darrin Mish. I've resolved over $100 million in tax debt for clients. Here's what you should know.

A judge in Washington D.C. has asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide an update on when emails between the agency and Lois Lerner will be released. Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court wants the emails made available by June 29 for a July 1 conference.

Sullivan first issued a June 4 order requesting the IRS to explain the Lerner emails, which were believed to have been lost. The IRS complied with the order because Judicial Watch had inquired if all the mail had been accounted for. The agency is still in possession of the emails. The 2013 Judicial Watch request came under the Freedom of Information Act.

A June 15 filing by Judicial Watch requested that Sullivan order the IRS to cease its stonewalling in regard to the emails and release them to the court. This includes any subsets or backups of the approximately 6,400 emails in question. The IRS claims to have already gone over all of the emails and removed any duplicates.

Lois Lerner served as the director of the Exempt Organizations Unit within the IRS from 2006 until 2013. She is one of the higher profile figures in the IRS targeting controversy.
