Most people I talk to about their IRS problem have already built the worst-case scenario in their head. The reality is usually much more manageable. I'm Darrin Mish, and I've been representing taxpayers before the IRS for 32 years. Here's what actually tends to happen.

Dennis Erik Fluck Von Kiel, a 58-year-old man from New Tripoli, PA, recently received a 41-month prison sentence because he committed fraud upon several governmental agencies. The convicted criminal also told lies during an official bankruptcy conference. Formerly a medical director, Von Kiel entered several guilty pleas to crimes that included evading IRS tax payments, perjury, financial aid fraud, mail fraud and conspiracy plans to defraud the United States government. Going to prison is not the end of Von Kiel’s conviction. He is also required to pay back hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service.

Although Von Kiel is a doctor of osteopathy, he falsely claimed that he was a Christian minister so that he could defraud the government by stating that he did not owe any money because he had taken a vow of poverty. He even asked his employer to deposit his paycheck into phony church bank accounts. The money was then filtered out into his own personal bank accounts so he could use it to pay for family expenses. In addition, Von Kiel used the monies to buy expensive personal luxury items.
