Most of what you've read online about IRS problems is wrong, or at least misleading. I'm Darrin Mish. I practice tax law in Tampa and I've been doing this for 32 years. Here's what's actually true.
Sometimes the writing is not only the wall—but it’s etched in stone. The controversy of whether high-ranking officials as to whether they targeted the tax exempt status of conservative groups? It just goes to show you that politics is alive and well at every level and in every political affiliation. Numerous examples of “circumstantial evidence” to prove that Tea Party nonprofits were in the crosshairs of IRS officials.
The Justice Department, after its investigation, announced that there would be no charges filed against anyone who was “allegedly” targeting conservative groups. This was despite the fact that several congressional investigations discovered evidence that there was misconduct involved. The Justice Department’s reasoning was that every case is different, with different facts that must be examined.
On a note, the IRS has powers that it can execute when it comes to taxes etc. As a typical citizen, or anyone with an IRS challenge, the best approach is to work with an expert to avoid any IRS issues.
The truth is no one on the bottom rung of the ladder has the power or the means to go toe-to-toe with the IRS. Avoid the challenge—hook up with a tax expert.
