Apparently, Coe who is now 76, used his earnings to cover various debts and to feed a gambling habit. Also, he always arranged to be paid in cash, and not in $50 bills which Coe thought were laced with bad luck. His touring schedule included playing 100 concerts a year. He would arrange for his manager to pick up the cash, pay himself, and then split up the rest between Coe and his band members.
The IRS saw this as his attempt to avoid paying taxes.
Coe, has had previous brushes with the law and served time as a result. In the past, he spent significant time behind bars for auto theft and armed robbery. He also had time extended while in jail for killing an inmate. He’s no stranger to controversy.
