There's the version of tax resolution the late-night commercials sell you. Then there's how it actually works. I'm Darrin Mish, a Tampa tax attorney. I've spent 32 years on the inside of these cases. Here's the real version.

It’s a sad day when you hear that ten people, including a person working at the Fort Benning Military Hospital, were sentenced for their part in stealing the identities and committing tax fraud.

The scheme was extensive and perpetrated Alabama and Georgia. The tax fraud ring was responsible for filing 9,000, plus, fraudulent individual tax returns. The ring bilked the government for more than $24 million dollars before getting caught. Nearly $10 million in refunds was paid out by the IRS before the thieves were stopped.

The number of military personnel whose identities were stolen totaled 1500. Those responsible for the theft were sentenced. Crime doesn’t pay rings true. However, criminals are always hard at work trying to figure out how they can snare their next victim. Always safe guard your personal information as best you can.
