A real IRS agent could visit a home for one of several reasons:
- The person is being audited and they have an appointment
The agent is doing an investigation
The individual owes taxes and has been unreachable in other ways
While these are legitimate reasons for a visit, a true IRS agent will have proper documentation and will not demand cash or other items on the spot.
The IRS cautions citizens to be aware of the likelihood that an IRS visitor could be an imposter, particularly if there is no known tax trouble. For routine issues with tax returns, the IRS sends notifications through the mail. If you are unaware of any IRS difficulties, then that person knocking at your door could be just posing as an agent to gain entry to your home.
