More Budget Cuts Coming for the IRS

IRS problems aren't as complicated as they look once you see the structure. I'm attorney Darrin Mish. I've represented taxpayers before the IRS for three decades — in Florida, Colorado, Texas, and internationally. Here's the plain-English breakdown.

Is it possible for the IRS to do its job amidst pending budget cuts? Probably not, because it goes against the grain of common sense. Several, former, IRS commissioners are petitioning Congress (joint letter) urging Congress to drop the idea of cutting the agency’s annual budget.

The IRS has an annual 2015 budget of $10.9 billion. That seems like a staggering amount, but according to the IRS, it barely allows for the job get done. However, reducing the budget by $838 million dollars is no small sum. If the budget cut remains intact, it will be the sixth year in a row for the IRS.

Consider that the IRS has lost over 15,000 employees in the past five years, and you can imagine what’s happening to the country’s tax system. With even more cuts looming in the near future, no one knows what the results will be. There are sure to be adjustments, but the right thing to do is stay the course with your tax reporting efforts.

Hire a tax attorney who can help you stay on course and avoid penalties, or worse, from not having paid your taxes. It’s too easy to jump off the bandwagon and assume that the IRS is asleep.
