New IRS Proposal Wants Nonprofits to Collect Social Security Numbers

Strange things can happen when groups are targeted by the IRS. In this case it’s nonprofits. The IRS recently came up with a proposal for nonprofits to collect the Social Security Number of donors’ to tea-party and some Christian groups. There’s still a lot of outrage going on due to the fact that some groups had applications delayed; some were asked to promise that they would not oppose Planned Parenthood etc.

The big concern for some is that this is a sure sign of government overreach when donors, of some organizations, will be flagged if they give at least $250 in one year. This could very well stop people from donation to worthy causes. As such, donations that are written off are well into the billions of dollars. Could this be a tax base that the government will no longer be able tap into if the ‘giving well’ dries up?

Beyond politics, it’s should be the hope of everyone to benefit from non-partisan actions and policies by any government agency. Fairness instills confidence in the system. It also helps ensure that whoever is at the helm will administer programs justly and fairly. This merits watching very closely.
