Lois Lerner’s problems began in 2013 when she appeared before the House Oversight Committee and pleaded the Fifth Amendment regarding the harrassment of conservatives seeking to be non-profit. The scandal became more complicated when it was discovered that nearly 24,000 of Lerner’s emails had somehow been erased.
A memo from 2010 revealed a meeting between Lerner and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in which Lerner encouraged the DOJ to pursue legal action against groups she felt were not obeserving the FEC law. This incident is linked to the sharing of over one million pages of tax documents with the DOJ, which is a violation privacy laws.
Documents from July 2013 indicate justice officials wanted to see certain documents before being admitted into the congressional investigation of the IRS scandal.
The situation continues to be disturbing because of the blatant violation of federal privacy laws in regard to tax documents, which contain very sensitive information that could be abused by politicians and others. All citizens are entitled to fair tax law enforcement.
It is expected that Congress will continue its in-depth investigation into the IRS scandal, which may have far-reaching consequences. The storm is far from over for Lois Lerner.
