Mike Sorrentio, a reality show TV star, has been accused of tax fraud.
Mike and his brother Mac, were both indicted and charged with filing false tax returns to the tune of $8.9 million. Mike’s attorney removed himself from the case, claiming that Mike was no longer able to pay for his legal services. Mike, claiming that he simply can’t afford the payments, is presently searching for another tax attorney.
Fraudulent tax filing is on the rise. Almost 1500 cases were investigated by the IRS in 2015. This constituted a 66 percent surge over 2014.
Criminals, having stolen the taxpayer’s personal information such as employer info and Social Security numbers, are able to direct refund payments to their own accounts. Billions of dollars are bilked from taxpayers in the process.
While there’s no fool-proof method of guarding against identity theft, there are measures you can take, like not leaving a paper trail, securing private records and statements, removing your name from marketing lists, and monitoring your credit report.
If you find yourself in a jam with the IRS, it might be a good thing to consult with a tax attorney who can help you sort through the mess.
