America’s businesses are under threat of identity theft, but is it the fault of the IRS? Understandably, and rightfully so, businesses, large and small, have a duty to keep the public’s information safe and secure. No doubt, the IRS is working hard to make sure that unauthorized individuals are prevented from using a business’s identifying information to claim tax benefits, there are still short comings in the system that need to be plugged.

Of course all of this is happening while the IRS struggles to maintain a level of efficiency amidst budget cuts and layoffs. Consider the fact that 15,000 layoffs have occurred in the past five years.

There’s also a challenge with individual taxpayer information being stolen and false returns being filed. The IRS is trying to compensate by allowing individuals to see get a copy of the false returns that were filed with their Social Security numbers.

These are challenging times for everyone. However, individuals can opt to hire a tax attorney that can help walk them through all the nuances of tax law and regulations. It’s always best to be on the safe side, regardless of what’s happening with the IRS.
