Most of what you've read online about IRS problems is wrong, or at least misleading. I'm Darrin Mish. I practice tax law in Tampa and I've been doing this for 32 years. Here's what's actually true.<\/p>\n

The Republicans have never been hot on the so-called \u2018Buffet Rule\u2019 where the government raise taxes<\/a> on the wealthy, particularly the millionaires. In fact, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La. went so far as to describe the initiative as \u2018class warfare\u2019. Scalise has now come up with an alternative on behalf of the GOP. He said he plans to submit a bill that would add a line to the 1040 tax form allowing people who feel they do not pay enough income tax to opt to pay more.<\/p>\n

Scalise said, \u201cI wanted to make sure that there was an option out there on the IRS tax form for those out there who wanted to send more of their money into Washington to help pay down the deficit. It\u2019s an idea that solves a few problems and ensures that taxes won\u2019t be raised on America\u2019s job creators.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018Buffet Rule\u2019 came about because of a remark made by billionaire Warren Buffet that his secretary paid a higher tax rate than he does. So Scalise is giving Buffet an opportunity to \u201cput his money<\/a> where his mouth is\u201d and \u201csend in a check\u201d to the US Treasury.<\/p>\n

Scalise has gained the praise of a few industry stakeholders, notably the conservative group, Americans for Tax Reform whose founder Grover Norquist sent Scalise a letter praising his proposed bill. However, Norquist noted that when similar \u201ctax me more\u201d lines were put in at state level tax systems, the \u201climousine liberal set\u201d did not \u201cput their money where their mouth is.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Americans for Tax Reform said, \u201cMr. Buffett should be able to voluntarily pay extra income taxes if he feels the need to \u2013 without imposing broad, job-killing tax hikes on our nation\u2019s small employers. Taxpayers are calling Mr. Buffett\u2019s bluff with this legislation. It\u2019s his move.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other lawmakers also feel the same as Scalise and have voiced similar sentiments that Buffet should pay up all he feels he should be taxed on instead of having the President initiate a mandatory tax hike on the rich. Here are other comments on the Buffet Rule from various lawmakers.<\/p>\n

Last month, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d, \u201cIf he\u2019s feeling guilty about it, I think he should send in a check \u2026 but we don\u2019t want to stagnate this economy by raising taxes\u201d.<\/p>\n

Just after the announcement of the Buffet Rule, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., commented on \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d that the Buffett Rule would \u201csimply divide this country more,\u201d and \u201cwill attack job creators, divide people and it doesn\u2019t grow the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
