Here&#039;s what I want you to understand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry_header\">\n<div class=\"pad\">\n<p>The IRS has given American taxpayers with undeclared assets offshore one final chance to come clean and disclose details of their money overseas. \u00a0They have to do so by August 31 if they wish to escape criminal charges. \u00a0This is now the second time an amnesty program has been offered. \u00a0And according to IRS Commissioner, Doug Shulman, \u201cThis new disclosure initiative is the last, best chance for people to get back into the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry_content\">\n<div class=\"pad\">\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">A statement on the IRS website says, \u201cThis new effort gives those hiding money in foreign accounts a tough, fair way to resolve their tax problems once and for all. \u00a0And it gives people a chance to come in before we find them.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">The first Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program was held two years ago and ended October 15, 2009. \u00a0Most tax professionals feel that the first amnesty program was a huge success that resulted in thousands of taxpayers stepping forward to declare their overseas assets. \u00a0in total, about 15,000 Americans from around the world participated in the initial program followed by another 3,000 who stepped forward after the deadline. \u00a0But the taxpayers themselves had differing opinions about their participation. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getirshelp.com\/blog\/tag\/irs-audit\/\">Some were glad they participated whereas some regretted it because they were subjected to stringent audits and still made to pay heavy penalties.<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Many American taxpayers with foreign bank accounts have never reported them. \u00a0On the other hand, there are many who have but they omitted submitting a form called the Report on Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR), a requirement for every taxpayer who has an offshore bank account.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Those who participate in the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure program will have to pay 25% of the highest deposit amount of the year with the highest aggregate balance over the last 6 years. \u00a0The rate for the first amnesty period was 20%. \u00a0The higher tax penalty is to be fair to those who stepped forward earlier. \u00a0But those who have never had more than $75,000 in their offshore accounts at any time over the last 6 years will only have to pay a 12.5% penalty.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Shulman has issued a stern injunction, \u201cTax secrecy continues to erode. \u00a0We are not letting up on international tax issues, and more is in the works. \u00a0For those hiding cash or assets offshore, the time to come in is now. \u00a0The risk of being caught will only increase.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Check out more <a href=\"https:\/\/getirshelp.com\/blog\/category\/irs-news\/\">Tax Related News<\/a> stories by clicking that link.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"rank-math-contact-info wpseo_map_compat\"><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"rank-math-contact-info wpseo_address_compat show-address show-address-only\"><div class=\"rank-math-contact-section rank-math-contact-address\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"rank-math-contact-info wpseo_opening_hours_compat\"><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Knowledge is protection when the IRS is involved.
