Here&#039;s what I want you to understand.<\/p>\n<p>People who run their own businesses, are a sole proprietors of a trade or business or operate as independent contractors are considered self-employed. \u00a0If you are self-employed you would typically file <a href=\"https:\/\/getirshelp.com\/blog\/tag\/irs-forms\/\">Form 1040<\/a> and in addition also IRS Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business or Schedule C-EZ, Net Profit From Business. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getirshelp.com\/blog\/category\/irs-help\/\">Click here to read or watch more IRS Help resources.<\/a><br \/>\nHere are 6 tax tips for you:<br \/>\n1. Self-employment also includes work you do outside of your regular full-time job like a work-from-home part time activity done in addition to your regular job.<br \/>\n2. Your self-employment tax is a social security and Medicare tax similar to social security and Medicare taxes withheld from the salary of wage earners. \u00a0You can calculate your own self-employment tax using Form 1040 Schedule SE. \u00a0You can also deduct half of your self-employment tax when you calculate your adjusted gross income.<br \/>\n3. As a self-employed person, you should make quarterly estimated tax payments, otherwise you may be penalized at the end of the year for underpayment. \u00a0These tax payments are payable even if you have a regular full-time job where your salary is subjected to withholding tax. \u00a0The quarterly estimated tax is the means to pay your taxes for income that is not subjected to withholding tax.<br \/>\n4. The running costs of your business, known as business expenses, are deductible. \u00a0You do not have to capitalize them or include them in the cost of goods sold.<br \/>\n5. To deduct any business expense, make sure that the expense made is ordinary and necessary. \u00a0Ordinary means it is commonly made in your industry. \u00a0A necessary expense is one that is helpful and appropriate for your business. \u00a0Necessary does not imply indispensable.<br \/>\n6.
