IRS problems aren't as complicated as they look once you see the structure. I'm attorney Darrin Mish. I've represented taxpayers before the IRS for three decades \u2014 in Florida, Colorado, Texas, and internationally. Here's the plain-English breakdown.<\/p>\n

U.S. authorities are now targeting Belize banks<\/a> in an effort to crack down on Americans and companies suspected of hiding money in that country\u2019s banks.<\/p>\n

Hiding income and assets isn\u2019t a game that just anyone can play! It takes wealth and insider knowledge. A federal court in Miami is making headway in granting federal investigators the authority to review records that Belize banks maintain at Citibank and Bank of America.<\/p>\n

The accounts are called \u201ccorrespondent accounts.\u201d These accounts allow foreign banks to handle U.S. dollars without having a formal U.S. presence. <\/span><\/p>\n

With access to these accounts and their information, the IRS can identify U.S. taxpayers who hold such accounts or who are doing business with Belize institutions. Forcing foreign financial institutions to hand over such information remains a challenge. Where money is involved\u2014there are profits to be made. The hunt continues and it\u2019s an uphill battle.<\/p>\n
