Most people I talk to about their IRS problem have already built the worst-case scenario in their head. The reality is usually much more manageable. I'm Darrin Mish, and I've been representing taxpayers before the IRS for 32 years. Here's what actually tends to happen.<\/p>\n
David Allen Coe entered a guilty plea<\/a> in a Cincinnati federal court to charges of tax evasion to the tune of $466,000.<\/p>\n According to the IRS, Coe has failed to file taxes as far back as 1993 to the present. Between 2008 and 2013, he failed to pay taxes, or when he did, he failed to pay the required amount. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison. He arranged to have his manager pay him and his group in cash. Coe asked for his money to be paid in small denominations because he thought $50 bills were bad luck. He also gambled a great deal and paid off debts rather than pay his taxes. None the less, the IRS saw his method payments as an attempt for him to avoid paying taxes. Coe is reported to have stopped using a personal bank account in 2009.<\/p>\n The IRS regards an attempt to avoid paying taxes quite seriously. Jail time, penalties and fees could be the result of not paying taxes on time.<\/p>\n
