These calls warn taxpayers that they’ve committed tax fraud and that there is a warrant out for their arrest. Click here to watch or read more information on IRS Back Taxes.

Getting a call like that is understandably scary, but experts say that you should just ignore these threatening phone calls – it’s part of a popular scam that is picking up steam again.

The messages and phone calls are all similar. A person claiming to be an officer with the IRS tells prospective victims that there is a legal lawsuit against them over some tax fraud. For starters, the police will never call to tell someone that there is a warrant out for their arrest; they will just make the arrest. For that matter, no government agency will make phone calls to individuals or ask them to wire money.

In order to stay safe from this and similar scams, never reveal any personal information over the phone or agree to make payments. If you feel like you’ve been scammed, you can contact the Federal Trade Commission to make a complaint.

Check out more IRS News stories by clicking that link.

I'm Darrin Mish.
