An unofficial source from the IRS says investigators\u00a0believe that identity thieves who recently hacked the IRS website to gain access to more than 100,000 identities of taxpayers may be from Russia. \u00a0 IRS Commissioner John Koskinen<\/a> told reporters that the stolen identities were the work of a crime syndicate that stole the information to make fraudulent tax refund claims. \u00a0By the time the scam was discovered, Koskinen says the thieves could already have used the identities<\/a> to claim as much as $50 million in tax refunds.<\/p>\n But this is not the first time the IRS has been attacked by cyber criminals from overseas. \u00a0Read more about other times the IRS has mistakenly paid out fraudulent tax refunds and why the IRS believes the identity thieves are from Russia.<\/a><\/p>\n
