Yet, state Treasurer Jim McIntire this week dared to touch this dangerous topic when he proposed a 5 percent income tax to fund education.<\/p>\n

McIntire said an overhaul of the tax system is necessary because the state\u2019s current structure, which heavily relies on sales tax and property<\/a> tax, has caused the tax base to shrink over the past few decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is mathematically impossible for us to sustain an adequate investment in education on a shrinking tax base,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
