For 32 years I&#039;ve practiced federal tax litigation \u2014 routine audits, Tax Court cases, and everything in between. If you&#039;re facing an IRS issue, here&#039;s what you need to know first.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, the IRS publishes its list of 12 popular tax scams to enlighten the public about the latest ways scammers try to dupe innocent taxpayers.\u00a0 You might well lose not only money but your reputation as well if you fall prey to a tax scam.\u00a0 In the final analysis, you are responsible for what goes into your tax returns even though it was prepared by someone else.\u00a0 So make sure you hire a qualified tax agent or lawyer to help you submit your tax returns.\u00a0 Here are this year\u2019s \u201cDirty Dozen\u201d.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bogus phone calls<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is a perennial tactic used by scammers where they impersonate an IRS officer asking you for your personal financial details.\u00a0 Very often the caller uses a very aggressive tone to get what they want.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Phishing scams<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Another recurring method used by scammers is sending you emails (or snail mail) supposedly from the IRS.\u00a0 Remember, the IRS will never send you an email for no reason, so if you do get one do not click on any of the links inside or reply to the email.\u00a0 Instead, you should report it to the IRS immediately by forwarding the email to <a href=\"mailto:phishing@irs.gov\">phishing@irs.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Identity theft<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Another favorite tactic of scammers is impersonating as a taxpayer and claiming the victim\u2019s tax refunds.\u00a0 This is why it\u2019s a good idea to submit your taxes early so that should a scammer try to impersonate as you, the IRS would flag his tax return because it has already received yours.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Fraudulent Tax Preparer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Tax season is here.\u00a0 This is the time of the year when dishonest preparers offer you their \u2018services\u2019 to steal your refund or financial information.\u00a0 When it comes to tax returns, spend the little extra by hiring a qualified tax agent or lawyer.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/getirshelp.com\/blog\/tag\/tax-evasion\/\">Offshore Tax evasion<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Don\u2019t try hiding your taxable assets in offshore banks.\u00a0 There is no \u2018safe tax haven\u2019 anymore.\u00a0 Remember what happened to UBS Bank of Switzerland?\u00a0 Their officers were helping wealthy US citizens hide their taxable income in their bank.\u00a0 But the bank ended up having to pay a hefty fine to avoid criminal prosecution.\u00a0 And their US clients were also rounded up in the dragnet as the IRS went in pursuit of the tax cheats.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Over-the-top Tax Refunds<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If someone is promising he can get you a tax refund that sounds too good to be true, it likely is.\u00a0 Scammers look for victims by setting up phony store fronts or advertising with flyers and word of mouth in community groups and churches.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be fooled.<\/p>\n<p>So here are the six of the \u201cDirty Dozen\u201d tax scams.\u00a0 In my next article, I shall cover the next six scams highlighted by the IRS.\u00a0 Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;m Darrin Mish.
